A Brief Historical sketch of the diocese of Warangal – According to Christian tradition in south India.
St. Thomas the Apostle came to our country & established Christian communities in Kerala in 52 AD.
During expedition of vasco-da-Gama in 1498, brought along some Portuguese missionaries and spread Christianity in different parts of country.
Luis do Salvador entered Telugunadu’s vijayanagar kingdom and started preaching, He was killed in 1510 & become first martyr of church in Andhra.
In the second half of 16th century Jesuits continued the work of Franciscans, started carnatic mission which paved the way for establishment of the church in Andhra.
With the hard work of Msgr. Clement Bonnand in 1832 madras was erected as a vicariate, bringing under it the entire Telugu mission.
Later on for further administrative facilities Visakhapatnam & Hyderabad bifurcated and erected into separate vicariates in 1850 & 1851.
Hyderabad vicariate was entrusted to the pontificio istituto mission estere (PIME) of Milan, Italy.
While taking care of existing Catholics, being true to their missionary charisma, the PIME fathers engaged themselves in spreading the faith of the area & graduallay won many people for Christ.
In 1949, the plan for creating the new diocese of Warangal was clear as the growth of mission centres and the number of faithful largely increased.
Fr. Mariani PIME was entrusted with the work of site identification for the future diocesan headquarters. With his efforts and prayers he bought 71 acres of land in Kazipet (11 km from Warangal).
To take possession of the land, Bro. Sala Pasquallino PIME was sent to Warangal on 18th Aug 1949. If the procurement of the land was a great thing, the grant of permission to utilise it for construction of bishop’s house and other buildings was a miracle. As govt of Andhra had drawn a master plan for market, school, Dispensary and some other buildings on the same land.
The situation, full of doubts, fears & interruptions lasted more than a year. On may 13th & 14th 1950, the statue of our lady of Fatima toured Hyderabad Diocese. At this time Bishop Beretta pleaded for a special intervention of our lady Fatima to overcome the problem meanwhile Br. Sala named the mission land as Fatima Nagar. Within five months after the tour of the statue of lady Fatima officials granted permission for the construction of buildings on this site.
3rd January 1951 Bishop A Beretta laid foundation stones for Bishop’s House and St. Ann’s Hospital at Fatima Nagar.
Medicare Hospital was originally started by a local group of doctors under a trust by name Medicare educational trust in 2001 with a great charity intension, as they were all busy practitioners they could not able to manage it properly, then they consulted Fr.Colombo of Warangal diocese with a proposal to sell the propriety. On 2004 April 4 priests of the diocese of Warangal took over the trust by following the due procedure of resignation of former trustees and admitting of new trustees but a single trustee by name T. Rama devi went to court by Occusing that her signature was forged they created many Hurdles Medicare hospital never stopped serving the poor by the grace of God and support of Medicare educational trust under the leadership of our Chairman Most.Rev.Udumala Bala After long fight with the opponents finally we proved in the court of law after 15 years on oct. 22. 2019. Innocent.
Medical mission at Warangal started on 3rd January 1951 soon Bishop A.Beretta laid foundation stone for Bishop’s House & St. Ann’s Hospital at Fatima Nagar.
Whereas medical mission of Warangal diocese was started in 1940 at Reddy palem with the establishment of St.Ann’s Hospital Reddy palem.
Warangal diocese is taking care of medical needs of poor & needy people of Telangana state irrespective of their cast, creed and religion at 2 major Hospitals – 1. St.Ann’s 2. Medicare General Hospital.
St.Ann’s Hospital at Fatima Nagar is the only private organization of Telangana which provides treatment at lowest price (some time without charging) for poor people of Telangana state. Per year on an average 40,000 cancer patients get treated.
Medicare General Hospital at Hunter road Warangal is a very big hospital in Telangana established in 2002 with an intension to provide good treatment to the common man. Medicare General Hospital is located in centre of the city with good transportation facility. Mainly catholic doctors are supporting by extending their services. Around 2,00,000 patients are treated here. Medicare General Hospital is located in 33 acres campus, which is named after Fr.Colombo as Fr. Colombo health city. Here every patient is treated with holistic approach. Huge patient crowd, sufficient infrastructure at Fr. Colombo health city with a quality clinical material is ideal for establishing a medical college. There is a need of establishing a college in support of Medicare General Hospital for the Holistic treatment and development of the Hospital.
Apart from there two major hospital diocese is also providing health care at Jeevadara Hospital Shanti Nagar.
Other than Hospital working under the Warangal diocese other organization of Warangal diocese also paying special attention on medical needs of people of Telangana in general, Warangal in particular.
Organizations extending their support to medical mission are Fatima charitable trust, Viswa Karunasangam, lodi multipurpose social service society etc.
Even other congregation and societies extended their support and service to medical mission in the areas of poor and dam of under villages for the people who suffer from Leprosy, Aids, Cancer, and different deadfall diseases.
Medicare General Hospital at Fr. Colombo Health city Warangal is established in 2002, as a part of Health mission by Warangal diocese to provide better health care to poor & needy to Telangana & Andhra Pradesh.
As per National health profile – 2016, 4414 Allopathic doctors available in government sector (264 dental surgeons) Average population served by each Govt. Allopathic doctor are 11,709 and Average population served by each dental surgeon are 1,95,773.
This huge gaping in Doctor: Patient ratio indicates the emergency & need of Hospital to serve the poor.
Medicare General Hospital under the guidance of chairman Most.Rev.Dr.Udumala Bala is trying to fill the gap by serving 600-800 patient a day for free of cost.
It has become a challenge for medical educational trust and chairman to meet the expenses now time has came to modernize digitalize the Hospital by replacing old equipments with advanced new ones.
In Telangana state there are 3400 seats available for students there is a huge demand for medical education students of catholic community are migrating to Philippines & other countries to require medical education.
Fr. Colombo health city is having a big campus for established a medical college along with ready to occupy medical college Building & vast clinical material Medicare General Hospital.
